Treasurer travels to Central West Virginia for Money Smart Week events
In an effort to educate both the public and state workers about the financial services and educational opportunities offered by the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office, State Treasurer John Perdue will travel to Central West Virginia next week, April 23-25. Treasurer Perdue will make stops in Monongalia, Harrison, Lewis and Upshur counties to participate in various financial wellness events hosted by the Treasurer’s Office. All events are part of the statewide Money Smart Week initiative.
Treasurer Perdue will start the week hosting three Get a Life financial education events at South Middle School in Morgantown. Get a Life is a nationally award-winning financial education program of the Treasurer’s Office. The hands-on budget activity engages both students and community volunteers to teach students basic math skills and problem solving techniques.
The office will also host a WVABLE event in Bridgeport on Monday to educate people about the Treasurer’s newest initiative. WVABLE, which stands for West Virginia Achieving a Better Life Experience, is a program that provides people with disabilities an opportunity to save and invest without jeopardizing their public benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid.
On Tuesday, the Treasurer will present a total of $1,000 to Lumberport Elementary School in Harrison County, for producing two regional student essay winners in this year’s SMART529 “When I Grow Up” essay contest. The two students are among 15 regional winners.
Tuesday afternoon, the Treasurer’s Office will kick off its three day Cash Handling Conference, a training and educational opportunity for state financial professionals at Stonewall Resort in Lewis County. The conference runs from Tuesday, Apr. 24 through Thursday, Apr. 26.
The tour concludes with a string of retirement planning informational sessions in Upshur County for state professionals who are invested in the West Virginia Retirement Plus deferred compensation plan.

Money Smart Week West Virginia is series of free classes and activities designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. AARP West Virginia sponsors the week through a partnership with the State Treasurer’s Office and several other state entities.
